Bassoon handrest
The bassoon handrest, or crutch, is the most important ergonomic element of the instrument. A good handrest can make the difference between playing comfortably or developing wrist pain just minutes after starting to play. Many bassoons include a small-sized handrest, as it’s designed for children who are just starting to play the instrument. However, as the years go by, the handrest starts to feel too small, and it’s time to replace it. It’s very important to choose one that fits our hand well, as everyone has different needs.
Size is the most relevant factor, and it should be according to the size of the hand. The handrest offered in the Sonata Custom shop is suitable for medium to large hands, but by using the custom product form you can order specific sizes or different shapes from the two standard options.
In addition to shape and size, the length of the shaft is another factor to consider. A shaft that is too short will force the fingers to remain bent to rest on the keys, while one that is too long will make it difficult to reach. On the other hand, the attachment system to the instrument will depend on which base is installed on your instrument. Make sure to correctly measure the type of rod your previous handrest had so that the new one fits perfectly. If you prefer, along with the handrest, a new base with an adjustable threaded rod can be included, allowing you to change the entire set with a simple screwdriver.

The images show the difference between the curved and straight ends. If you like, you can also indicate the approximate angle for the shaft in relation to the body in the form.
